As I travelled through Europe, I hit all the major cities and countries such as Paris; France, Berlin; Germany, Rome and Venice; Italy and Vienna; Austria. However, as we travelled around we thought we would try to get to some unheard of countries and see what it was like.
The first one we thought of was Slovenia. We saw its location between Italy and Croatia and though that the weather has to be great and the landscapes have be just as stunning as those found in Italy. We thought that the Capital would be a good place to start, so we headed for Ljubljana from Rome late at night in a fantastic sleeper train (an experience one must enjoy when travelling by train around Europe).
When we got to Slovenia in the early hours of the next day, it was very quiet, and we thought it was just because of the time. So we wandered around until we found a very nice hostel offering a great nightly rate, clean rooms, excellent location and washing and drying services for around 13 Euros a night. We were very tired so had a small nap. After we decided to explore the city.
Now at this point, it was around noon and the streets were still rather quiet. Sure, there were more people around at this time, but in comparison to every other city we had been to, it seemed dead. The city itself was very attractive in the centre. The main part of the city is overlooked by an impressive castle set high on a hill and it is cut in half by a river. The architecture is very eastern European and there are a couple of parks in the city centre as well as some lovely restaurants and classy bars.
The prices are very reasonable, with the exception of the restaurants along the riverside which can get a bit pricey. At night the city looks just as attractive, especially along the river which gets packed full of Slovenians who enjoy the warm evenings in a fantastic setting.
The people were very friendly and welcoming and gave us the great tip of visiting Lake Bled, around 45 minutes outside of Ljubljana. The weather was, as we assumed it would be, brilliant the entire time we were there and Ljubljana quickly became one of our favourite European destinations. I will definitely be going back.
I think I have a solution for what we should plan for Jayne’s party. Who would be up for a abrupt trip and spending a bit of cash on some time at one of the chalets I discovered while travelling? How amazing would that be?
